SUMMARY:THE CONFINED ARTS: Solitary Confinement Edition
DESCRIPTION:This edition of The Confined Arts will be a symposium consisting of an art exhibition\, poetry\, a panel discussion\, a promotional screening\, and more. Opportunities and Change will be collaborating with the Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement to highlight the humanity of the people held in solitary confinement inside of our nation’s prisons. Additionally\, we hope to raise awareness about the inhumane conditions and the use of solitary confinement to educate attendees.\nDate: Saturday  March 12\, 2016\nTime: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM\nSt. Francis College\n180 Remsen St\,\nBrooklyn\, NY 11201 \n  \nFree Admission \nRSVP NOW: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/confined-arts-solitary-confinement-edition-tickets-21437598434 \n\n\n\nPolitical eyes locally and nationally are focused on the brutality of solitary confinement. In New York\, the age of an inmate and amount of time a person can be exposed to solitary has been sharply reduced. \nThis Saturday\, March 12\, beginning at noon\, currently (via phone) and formerly incarcerated prisoners come to St. Francis College for The Confined Arts: Solitary Confinement Edition\, a showcase on how art and poetry can transcend prison walls while drawing the inhumanity of solitary confinement into sharp focus. \n\nThe day begins with an art exhibit by currently and formerly incarcerated men and women who have experienced solitary confinement.\nAt 1:00pm\, solitary confinement survivors will perform spoken word and poetry pieces. Attendees will also hear an introduction from Opportunities and Change and the Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement.\nAt 1:30\, a panel discussion on solitary confinement\, focusing on conditions in solitary confinement in New York State features panelists:\n\nDiscussion moderated by: \nRoy Waterman\nDirector of Program for Drive Change \nSpeakers include:\nJennifer J. Parish\nDirector of criminal justice advocacy at the Urban Justice Center Mental Health Project\nLeigh-Anne Francis\nAssistant Professor with a dual appointment in the departments of African and African American Studies and Women and Gender Studies\nRicky Jones\nWhcr.90.3 FM host of “Unlocked\,” Faculty member teaching in philosophy\, psychology and African History\nTiheba Bain\nVisionary for educational and social reform\, Associates Degree in Liberal Arts\nNate Williams\nConscious Musician\, Spoken Word Artist \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt 2:30\, we will have live call-in discussions with two men currently behind bars: Kenneth Reams is currently on death row. Spoon Jackson is serving a life sentence.
