SUMMARY:TAKE ACTION TODAY: Follow Up from June 5th Emergency Action for Parole Justice
DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\nThank you so much to all those who joined us on June 5th for our speakout in New York City\, and our day of action in Albany. It was an incredibly powerful and meaningful day\, and we accomplished so much.\n\nYou can see pictures of the day here. There was also an article in Daily News about our morning speakout that is\, besides from the first line\, a strong and supportive piece of media.\n\nNext Steps and Upcoming Actions!\n \n1. CALL IN CAMPAIGN NOW! \nCall Speaker Heastie and Assembly Member Lentol NOW and demand that they put our parole bills on the New York State Assembly floor for a vote. Call-in campaigns are one of the most effective tools we have. Please take three minutes to make these calls.\n\nCall NYS Assembly Speaker Heastie: 518-455-3791\nCall NYS Assembly Member Lentol\, Chair of the Codes Committee: 518-455-4477\n\n“I am New Yorker and I urge the Assembly to pass presumptive parole\, A.7546\, and elder parole\, A.6354A\, before the end of this legislative session. Parole injustice denies thousands of people in prison a real opportunity for release\, ensures death in prison\, and prevents New York from ending mass incarceration. We urge you to push these bills through the Codes Committee and the Assembly as a whole now.”\n \n2. Action at Fundraiser for Governor Cuomo\, Monday\, June 18th at The Plaza Hotel\nGov. Cuomo is having a fundraiser on Monday\, June 18th at The Plaza Hotel\, 768 Fifth Ave\, New York\, NY\, and advocates from across issues will be chanting outside with signs\, banners and t-shirts at 5:30pm. The event starts at 6. Meet us there or email Scott Paltrowitz at spaltrowitz@hotmail.com for more info.  \n\n\n\n\n3. Memo of Support for Presumptive and Elder Parole\nAs we near the end of the NYS legislative session\, we are making one last push for our legislative initiatives\, presumptive parole (S.8346/A.7546) and elder parole (S.8581/A.6354A). Both recently passed the Assembly Correction Committee\, but sit in the Codes Committee and have yet to reach the Assembly floor. Please write a memo of support from your organization for the bills by Thursday\, June 14th at 12pm and send them to Dave George at ddgeorge23@gmail.com.\n \n4. Release Aging People in Prison Campaign’s Monthly Coalition Meeting\, Wednesday\, June 20th at 6pm at the Correctional Association\, 22 Cortlandt Street\, 33rd Floor. There will be pizza\, drinks and a lively discussion about the end of this year’s legislative session. (RAPP Monthly Coalition meetings are usually held on the first Wednesday of every month. There will not be a coalition meeting on July 4th).\n\nThank you again for joining us on June 5th. We were honored to be in your presence and stand next to you in the struggle for parole justice.\n\nWarmly\,\nParole Justice New York
