DESCRIPTION:“Mass Supervision and the Making of the Carceral Citizen”\, a talk by Reuben Jonathan Miller\, PhD\, Member\, Institute for Advanced Study\, Princeton\, NJ\, Assistant Professor\, School of Social Service Administration\, University of Chicago \nThursday\, April 27th at 4pm in room C03\, School of Social Work  \nPrisoner reentry has become an important social institution in the life worlds’ of the urban poor. Drawing from ethnographic research in several large cities\, this presentation reveals how criminal justice policy has produced new ways to be in the social world\, a new form of citizenship distinguished by practices of legal exclusion\, and new “kinds” of people for the criminal justice system to manage\, changing the nature of social interaction within the so called inner-city\, and with it\, the ways in which people accused of a crime experience American democracy.
