SUMMARY:Free City Pop Up Schools
DESCRIPTION:Saturday June 20th\, 2015\nHarlem Location: Marcus Garvey Park 18 Mt Morris Park W\, New York\, NY\nBrooklyn Location: Herbert Von King Park 670 Lafayette Ave. Brooklyn\, New York \nCheck out the facebook event page for detailed information about the workshop schedules in each location \nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/610625445735416/ \nThe cost of college education continues to steadily rise. Low income\, undocumented and justice involved community members are shut out of privilege academic spaces of higher learning due to systemic barriers to education. The Education from the Inside Out Coalition believes that education is human right and not a privilege and that anyone who seeks to learn and advance their lives through education should be able to do so. \nThe Education from the Inside Out Coalition seeks to deprivilege education by making it accessible to all. So for one day we will be holding Radical Pop Up Schools in public spaces throughout New York City. \nThe classes will be instructed by organizers\, educators and artist and the classes will be framed around issues related to mass incarceration\, state violence and systemic racism. Mass incarceration and criminalization is the civil rights issue of our generation. As the prison populations continues to rise\, US representatives have finally begun to realize that the tough on crime and tough on drugs policies have done nothing except destabilize the lives of individuals\, families and communities. Recently\, murmurs of bipartisan effort to reduce the prison population have spread throughout major media. It was the policy of elected officials that created the mess we are in. The solutions to mass incarceration an not be led by them. They must be led by those who have lost and have much to gain.
