SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: Prison Terminal
DESCRIPTION:Be the Evidence International (BTEI) at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service is proud to host the return of Oscar®-nominatedfilmmaker Edgar Barens in NYC on Saturday\, April 25 to present his Oscar®-nominated documentary: PRISON TERMINAL: THE LAST DAYS OF PRIVATE JACK HALL with Follow-up Discussion with the Film Director\, Edgar Barens\, plus more! \nThe event is in celebration of the release of BARENS’ film on the fifth anniversary of the Aging Prison Forum: A Crisis in Need of Intervention in which BARENS showed prerelease clips of the film. There will be members from NY and National CURE presenting on prison & reentry issues and vulnerable populations such as women\, persons with mental health & other disabilities\, and the aging. Included will be testimonies from those formerly incarcerated and their family members. \nThe event is being cosponsored by Be the Evidence International\, Jane Addams College of Social Work\, University of Illinois – Chicago\, Art Based Social Work Practice\, LIU Brooklyn Department of Social Work\, Activists IV Social Justice at LIU Brooklyn\, and Ramapo College School of Social Work. The event is FREE and open to the public. \n   \nNearly 20% of prisoners in U.S. penitentiaries are elderly. Over the next decade\, approximately 100\,000 inmates\, many serving life sentences\, will die alone in their cells. As a result\, some prisons have created hospices that enlist inmate volunteers to care for these terminally ill prisoners. Oscar®-nominated last year in the category of Documentary Short Subject\, PRISON TERMINAL: THE LAST DAYS OF PRIVATE JACK HALL goes behind the walls of the Iowa State Penitentiary\, one of America’s oldest maximum-security prisons\, to tell the story of a terminally-ill WWII veteran serving a life sentence for murder who resides in an on-premises hospice unit staffed in part by fellow prisoners. Showing how the hospice experience can profoundly touch the lives of the incarcerated\, both those nearing death and those who may find a measure of redemption in caring for inmate patients. The film is currently available via HBO GO and for purchase or rental from Cinema Guild in New York. (www.cinemaguild.com) \n  \nPRISON TERMINAL: THE LAST DAYS OF PRIVATE JACK HALL was directed\, produced and photographed by Edgar Barens; edited by Geof Bartz\, A.C.E.; co-edited by Gladys Mae Murphy.
