This website is the result of a language documentation project conducted by students of Columbia University over the summer of 2020. During two months, our group compiled data to make sections of a sketch grammar and an accompanying dictionary for the Balti language.
Balti is a North-Western Tibetic language of the Sino-Tibetan family spoken by roughly 400,000 native speakers in the region of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.
All data posted on this website may be freely shared and used for educational or academic purposes.

Could it be possible that I ask your support in transcribing and translating some audio files of Purikskat? I’m an amateur language researcher working with several dialects of Tibetan, especially Western archaic dialects. Now I’m trying to write out an evangelical audio message (Globalrecordings) narrated in Purik language.

ngyespai “بخشش” thob-a ma thop zere
su-la yang chhespa ma yan.
(Whether he’ll be forgiven from his sin or not – anyone [around the sick person] couldn’t believe [that it happens so])
چیا زیر بہ نہ کُھونتی شائ مِگیسی تھونگمہ مہ یان،
cia zerbana khunti shai migisi thongma ma yan,
(Because their “physical” eyescould not see [the power to heal],)
دو مِگیسی تھونگمہ ئ صفتچِک مینمہ اِن۔
do migisi thongmai “صفت” cik menma in.
(That [power] is not a sort of thing which can be seen by physical eyes,)
مِگیسیمی تھونگمہ ئ برکت چِک اِن۔
migisi mi thongmai “برکت”cik in.
(…but is a blessing that cannot seen by physical eyes.)

There is book “Short sketch on Balti grammar” in English writing style by Ghulam Hassan Lobsang writer and historian from skardu baltistan. The book is published by Bern University switzerland in 1995
We are aware! We tried to use Lobsang’s grammar but, due to the pandemic, we were not able to get a hold of it. It is definitely a useful resource for all researchers, but it is not widely and publicly available.
