Dana Hoey works with photography, video and collage. She has exhibited at the Hirshorn Museum in Washington D.C., the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, PS1, here in New York City, and at various commercial galleries in the United States and Europe. Her work is in the collections of the Los Angeles MoCA, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in D.C., and the Guggenheim, New York. Hoey is represented by the Friedrich Petzel Gallery. The VALS team would like to thank everyone for making last week’s debut such a memorable event. This week we are honored to have Kate Gilmore as the next visiting artist in our series. There will be a screening of a selection or her performances and a discussion over food and drink.

Kate Gilmore is an installation, video, and performance-based artist. Selected exhibitions include the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art; Brooklyn Museum; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Bryant Park (Public Art Fund); Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati; Artpace, San Antonio; The J. Paul Getty Museum; The Rose Art Museum; Istanbul Museum of Art; Haifa Museum of Art; PS1/MoMA Contemporary Art Center. She has a solo exhibition opening at MOCA Cleveland in March 2013. Gilmore has been the recipient of several international awards and honors, such as the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Award for Artistic Excellence, the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance, Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award, The LMCC Workspace Residency, New York Foundation for The Arts Fellowship, and The Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Residency. Her work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Brooklyn Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Indianapolis Museum of Art; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

The VALS team is very excited to present our inaugural speaker for the 2012-2013 season: Alfredo Jaar.
Jaar is an artist, architect, and filmmaker who lives and works in New York. He was born in Santiago de Chile in 1956.
His work has been shown extensively around the world. He has participated in the Biennales of Venice, São Paulo, Sydney, and Istanbul among others, as well as Documenta in Kassel.
Venues for his solo exhibitions include the New Museum in NY, Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Fundación Telefónica in Santiago and Musée des Beaux Arts in Lausanne. This summer in Berlin an extensive retrospective titled, “The Way It Is. An Aesthetics of Resistance,” was presented by the New Society for Visual Arts across three major sites around the city.
Jaar is a Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow and has received Spain’s prestigious Premio Extremadura a la Creación.
As you enjoy your summer your 2012-2013 VALS team is hard at work in the initial stages of a process that will bring a wide variety of compelling artists to speak with Columbia MFA students. We are reviewing nominations and will be in touch with everyone soon for further feedback. We will begin the invitation process shortly after.
