**Thursday**, February 19th, 8 PM: Aki Sasamoto

PERFORMANCE IS A CRAFT and not a right, as some artists and related others would have audiences think. Artist/performer Aki Sasamoto, however, is a rare example of someone for whom performance is both craft and right, and her latest show… is yet more proof of her uncommon expertise over this slippery medium. — Jennifer Krasinski, Artforum

Aki Sasamoto works in sculpture, performance, dance and whatever other medium it takes to get her ideas across. In her installation/performance works, Sasamoto moves and talks inside the careful arrangements ofsculpturally-altered objects to activate the bizarre emotions behind daily life.  Her works appear in gallery spaces, theater spaces and in odd sites. These works have been shown at the Kitchen, Chocolate Factory Theater, Soloway, Whitney Biennial 2010 at Whitney Museum, Greater New York 2010 atMOMA-PS1, New York; Mori Museum, Take Ninagawa, YokohamaTriennale 2008, Japan; Gwangju Biennial 2012, South Korea; and numerous other international and domestic venues. She has collaborated with visual artists, musicians, choreographers, mathematicians and scholars. She is also a co-founder of the nonprofit interdisciplinary organization, Culture Push Inc.

Sasamoto received her BFA for Wesleyan University in 2004 and her MFA from Columbia University in 2007.  She is currently an assistant professor of sculpture at the Mason Gross School of the Art at Rutgers University.

Tuesday, December 2, 8 PM: Matthew Brannon

brannon_1  008
“Brannon is best known for his elegant letterpress prints, which the artist contrarily, or confidently, makes in editions of one. These are characterized by simple graphic images of lobsters, martini glasses, cigarettes, bottles of wine – ‘adult pacifiers’, as Tumlir puts it – and fruit bowls, steak knives, chessboards – ‘the heraldry of the metropolitan subject’. The prints look neat, polite and New Yorker-ish, though the images are accompanied by despairing, often passive-aggressive fragments of text that mimic the effect of an advertisement or a movie poster: ‘This year tell her you love her all over again. With a grab bag of diamonds. With mouthfuls of caviar.’ Or: ‘You keep the art. It’s all shit anyway. I’ll take the house.’” – Laura McLean-Ferris, ArtReview

Brannon studied at the University of California graduating with a BA in 1995, and completed his MFA in 1999 at Columbia University in New York. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums including Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and the Badischer Kunstverein in Germany, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, the Royal Academy in London, and MAK in Vienna. He is represented by David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles and Office Baroque in Brussels, Belgium.

Brannon will be giving studio visits with Cole Sayer and Bryan Jabs.

Checkout Nick van Woert’s website here!

Informed by his background in architecture and driven by a fascination with antiquity, Nick van Woert claims to “hijack” the art historical past to create his striking, wry sculptures. A strong sense of history—both natural and human—unites his prolific output. He cites Vitruvius, the early Roman architect who was inspired by nature, as a significant influence. Like an urban archaeologist, van Woert combs through the convenience stores, factories, and dumpsters in Brooklyn to source materials for his sculptures, which he then re-presents in elegant works like Home and Garden (2011). In this work, van Woert fills transparent rectangular containers with a colorful assortment of consumer and industrial products—including Kool-Aid, a Dunkin Donuts billboard, salt, and hair gel—and stacks the containers to form two perpendicular walls that look like exposed geological strata.

Nick van Woert (born 1979) is an American artist from Reno, Nevada. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He studied architecture (BArch) at the University of Oregon and Fine Arts (MFA) at Parsons the New School for Design in New York.

Rirkrit Tiravanija

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of his generation. His work defies media-based description, as his practice combines traditional object making, public and private performances, teaching, and other forms of public service and social action. Winner of the 2004 Hugo Boss Prize awarded by the Guggenheim Museum, his exhibition there consisted of a pirate radio (with instructions on how to make one for yourself). Tiravanija
was also awarded the Benesse by the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum in Japan and the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Lucelia Artist Award.
