UNSP/UNSPWG Retreat

On September 14-15, members of the UN Studies Program and UNSP Working Group at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs left New York City for a group retreat. The theme for the weekend was “Old Peace, New Wars: The New Drivers of Conflicts.”

Attendees discussed how the Middle East, the Sahel, the Great Lakes, East Africa and Afghanistan/Pakistan are affected by new forms of conflict.

The following distinguished guests spoke at the retreat:

Richard Gowan
Associate Director of NYU’s Center on International Cooperation, Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, and columnist for the World Politics Review.

Francesco Mancini
Senior Director of Research at the International Peace Institute. Heads the larger IPI program Coping with Crisis, Conflict, and Change and directs IPI work on peace operations.

Youssef Mahmoud
Senior Advisor at the International Peace Institute, Former Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Chad and Burundi.
