October 10, 2017 | 4 pm – 7 pm (Doors at 3:30pm)

Arrive when doors open to experience projects by Eiko Otake + Miya Masaoka + Brooke O’Harra. Pre-event viewing begins at 3:30pm.

Artists and scholars come together in a three-hour workshop to discuss critical engagements with history both through and as performance. With a focus on perspectives from Japanese performing arts, this session emphasizes the contemporary social and political possibilities of performance as an embodied practice. The workshop features composer / sound artist Miya Masaoka, director Brooke O’Harra, and choreographer / movement artist Eiko Otake. The event will include artist presentations, a movement workshop led by Eiko Otake, and a discussion led by anthropologist Marilyn Ivy.

A group of scholars have been invited to discuss and reflect on the workshop in a written “roundtable” for publication following the event. Participating scholars include Katie Brewer Ball, Peter Eckersall, Tyran Grillo, Ellie Hisama, William Johnston, Thomas Looser, and Karen Shimakawa. The text, as its own kind of performance that takes place in the time of writing, will become another piece of the workshop.

Note to participants – please wear comfortable clothing for the movement workshop.

The event is free and open to the public with advance registration. Please register here.

Doors will open at 3:30pm and projects by Eiko Otake, Miya Masoaka, and Brooke O’Harra will be on view. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience work by the three artists interacting in the same space!
