Close to 50% of the students who enroll at SIPA each year are international students (not U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents). For some international students the transition to New York City can be a challenging one. To help incoming international students make the adjustment to life in New York City the Columbia University International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) provides support and assistance.
One of the things that ISSO does prior to school starting is to host a series of events on campus and around the city to help make the transition to graduate study a smooth one. There is an orientation for all new international graduate students across the university as well as a series of city tours, events, and dinners to help familiarize new students with the city and to start to develop a network of support.

The World Bank has been featured on this site before as an organization with opportunities for policy minded people. We featured their Junior Professional Associates Program in a previous entry and we just became aware of another opportunity through the World Bank Youth 2 Youth Community (Y2Y). Y2Y is sponsoring an essay competition on youth entrepreneurship. The focus on the essay is to elaborate on the following questions:
What are the constraints to youth entrepreneurship in your country? Has the global crisis changed the dynamics? How can governments help young entrepreneurs to create and further develop their social and productive ventures?
Full details on the competition can be found on the Y2Y Web site. The deadline to apply is September 22nd. Winning a competition like this certainly would look good on a résumé submitted as part of SIPA application . . .
When I hear about new scholarship opportunities that might apply to our applicants I typically post them in two places – this blog and our Database of External Fellowships. I am happy to report that last spring an incoming SIPA student was awarded a $23,000 scholarship that he found out about by reading this blog. It can literally pay to subscribe.
Yesterday I became aware of a scholarship opportunity for graduates of Seoul National University that are admitted to SIPA. While you must be actually enrolled in our program to apply, this is something to keep on your radar if you are a graduate of Seoul National University and are admitted and join us in the future.

I have been crunching a lot of numbers lately and I thought it might be interesting to post a list of the universities/colleges our incoming MIA, MPA, and MPA-DP students attended. In total, the applicants for fall 2009 obtained their undergraduate degree from 887 different universities/colleges.
This number only includes the university where the degree was obtained – if we include universities where students took additional classes (i.e. semesters abroad or graduate degrees) the list balloons up to well over 1,000. The following are just the universities/colleges attended by those new students joining us this fall. This list does not include every single incoming student, some students attended the same school and I tried to weed out the duplicate records.
If you see your current school or Alma mater on the list, maybe you will have company next year. If not, we love to see our list grow!
