INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRESENTERS & DISCUSSANTS:

A Note on the Audience

The IPWSD is targeted towards an interdisciplinary audience.  Accordingly, participants at the IPWSD will include individuals with expertise across a range of disciplines and with different levels of prior knowledge related to the exact topic of research or field of study that each speaker may be addressing.  We ask that speakers to please consider the requirements of such an audience when developing their presentations, and try to avoid the excessive use of jargon, discipline-specific terminology, or other barriers to inter-disciplinary discussion.  Thanks!

Presentation technology

A projector and computer will be set up for the workshop and made available for all presenters.  Our default assumption is that you will use these for your PowerPoint or .pdf presentation. Hooking up of personal laptops is strongly discouraged; if you have special software needs, please contact us.

Please come with the files required for your presentation on a flash memory key (USB memory device), or, if this is not possible, please email them to [email protected] with minimum 24 hours advanced notice, and we will make sure they are set up for you.  It is recommended that you avoid the use of file names like ipwsd2011.pdf, as this may conflict with your colleagues’ presentations.

Duration

Exact details on presentation duration will be communicated to presenters when the final IPWSD program is completed, and will depend on the number of confirmed presentations.  It is expected in advance that presentation slots, including discussants’ and general discussion, will be in the range of 20-30 minutes.

Discussants

Discussants are expected to provide a brief discussion, focusing on general issues and questions raised or omitted by the paper. They should leave sufficient time for discussion with the floor. Any detailed comments can be passed on to the presenter after the session, possibly in written form.  Arrangements will be made to provide discussants with a draft of the paper, presentation, or long abstract (as available) in advance of the presentation.

Moderation

Members of the IPWSD Planning Committee will serve as moderators for each session of the workshop to ensure that proceedings remain on schedule.

The Sustainable Development Doctoral Society is the official organization of the students in the Ph.D. Program in Sustainable Development at Columbia University.
