Critical Writing provides an introduction to the Barnard English major and to the study of literature in general. We will read and discuss texts ranging from the classical period to the present, sampling a variety of genres and critical approaches. We’ll consider how people have thought about literature in the past, and we’ll examine the current critical landscape. In your writing for this course, you will explore and experiment with a range of techniques and critical strategies as you develop your abilities to read and analyze texts and to express your ideas in lively and lucid prose.

This spring, most materials for this course will be housed on a course blog. To join the blog, go to https://edblogs.columbia.edu/20201engl3193x002/ and log in using your uni.

A pdf of the course syllabus will be available soon.
