2018-2019

Environmental Geochemistry and Health in New York City (Fall 2018)
Instructor of Record
GSAS Teaching Scholars Fellowship (2018-2019)  for
proposing and teaching the course in the Dept of Earth and Environmental Science

Course Description:
This course will provide an overview of environmental contaminants and their impact on human health in urban areas, with a primary focus on New York City. This course is intended for juniors and seniors who feel comfortable with the concepts of introductory chemistry and environmental science courses and are interested in applying this knowledge to human health. Students will develop and practice fundamental research skills in short homework assignments that include describing contaminants of choice as well as interpreting and representing data. The course format integrates active learning exercises and group discussion into the lectures and students will engage in peer review and reflection to help practice and improve on research skills. To practice, we will focus on an example analyzing soil samples for lead, and then students will practice transferring these skills to their own contaminants of interest for homework assignments and the final project, allowing them to personalize their course experience.

Earth’s Origins, Evolution, Processes, and Future (Spring 2019)
Teaching Assistant
I organized and led the laboratory section of this introductory earth science course with weekly meetings and hands-on and computer-based exercises for ~30 undergraduate students.

2017-2018

CIRTL Fellow, Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
Throughout the year I co-facilitated a Journal Club for STEM Education Research and connected peers to resources at the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL). I also co-facilitated the four-session seminar Evidence Based Teaching Practices in STEM. Finally, through online workshops and in-person feedback, I worked to develop my own Teaching-As-Research project (discipline-based educational research).

2016-2017

Senior Lead Teaching Fellow, ColumbiaCenter for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
I mentored 5 graduate students who were Lead Teaching Fellows and were working on developing teaching  in their departments. In the Fall semester, I developed and co-facilitated a learning community on inclusive teaching called “Addressing Race and Gender Bias in the Classroom,” open to graduate students across Columbia. In the Spring semester I co-facilitated sessions for graduate students in the Reflective Teaching Seminar, which focused on reflecting on and improving learning goals, formative and summative assessments, student engagement, and inclusivity in the classroom.

2015-2016

Lead Teaching Fellow, Columbia Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
I facilitated workshops in the Earth and Environmental Science department for graduate students on teaching and learning. Meanwhile I started developing my own teaching through workshops at the CTL and in-person meetups for the MOOC Course: An Introduction to Evidence-Based Undergraduate STEM Teaching.

Earth’s Environmental System: Solid Earth (Fall 2015)
Teaching Assistant
I  organized and led the laboratory section of this introductory geology course, including preparing rock collections for student discovery and exams. We also assisted during geology field trips in the greater NY region.

2014-2015

Earth’s Environmental System: Climate (Spring 2015)
Teaching Assistant
I organized and led the laboratory section of this introductory climate science course with weekly meetings and hands-on and computer-based exercises. We helped develop three new lab activities for the course to update current course offerings.

Earth-Human Interactions (Fall 2014)
Teaching Assistant
I facilitated class discussions and online course interactions and assisted students as needed.
