Connecting to a Network Drive

If you need access to a drive, have a permissions problem, need a password reset, or have any other problems with connecting to a shared drive, please use the following form. For instructions on connecting to a drive once you have a username and password, or simply adding a drive when you are already connected to one or more, please scroll down a bit.

    Instructions for connecting to a drive using Windows

    1. Open a windows file explorer. Click the file explorer button in your taskbar, OR go to start > my computer, OR hold down the ⊞ Windows key and hit the R key, type “explorer” without the quotes, and hit Enter.

    2. In the window that is now displayed, in the left hand pane, RIGHT click on ‘Computer’ (in windows 10, it’s labeled “This PC”) and then click “Map Network Drive…”

    3. In the dialog that is now shown, choose a Drive letter from the drop-down. (Any available one – does not have to be a specific one.) In the folder line, type the full path name. Econ department shared drives all start with \\europa.econ.columbia.edu\ and ISERP shared drives all start with \\titan.iserp.columbia.edu\, followed with the drive name. In the screenshot below the name of the shared drive we are connecting to is the “deptinfo” drive on europa. If you already have a folder in the dropdown, you can choose it, then click the “Browse…” button to see all folders available on the server. If you are authorized to connect, you will be able to select it and click “OK”. Check “Reconnect at sign-in” and click finish.
    4. If this is the first time you are connecting, you may have to input your username and password. If you do not remember your username and password, please contact me.

    Instructions for Mac

    1. Make sure you are in the finder. – In the top left next to the apple icon, it should say “Finder”.
    2. Click Go > Connect to Server…connect_to_server
    3. In the window, type the name of the shared drive. For the Economics department, type smb://europa.econ.columbia.edu and for the ISERP department, type smb://titan.iserp.columbia.eduenter_drive_name
    4. On the next window, the list of shared drives will be shown. Click the one you wish to connect to.

    5. You will be asked for a username and password. If you do not remember your username or password, please contact me.name_and_password
    6. The shared drive will now be connected. To access another folder, simply click the drive in the sidebar of a finder window, and open the folder you wish to access. Note that you will get an error if you try connecting to a folder which you do not have the proper permissions for.select_drive
