Delta Gammas are committed to providing service to those who need it. Service for Sight has been at the heart of Delta Gamma’s philanthropic mission since 1936. The Delta Gamma Foundation has given over $2,700,000 in Service for Sight grants to organizations and schools that share the Foundation’s mission: to promote sight preservation and assistance to the 15 million children and adults who are blind or visually impaired.
As a chapter, we donate funds, glasses, and books to programs that aid those who suffer from blindess or visual impairments. We work hard to raise money for our national philanthropy, Service for Sight, in new and innovative ways through our annual Anchor Splash in the fall and ourAnchor Bake sale every spring. We’ve partnered with Charity Denimoffering discounted designer jeans and donating the proceeds to Service for Sight. In the Fall of 2010 & 2011, we put on the An Eye For Fashion fashion show with partners Rent The Runway that raised over $1000 for Service for Sight. Zeta Theta chapter is proud of our efforts to continuously push our membership to exceed fundraising and service commitment goals.
DGs enjoy volunteering their time at Recording for the Blind and Dyslexicand helping out at events held by Lighthouse International. DGs have also contributed to the community by creating tactile books for children with visual impairments, volunteering at a summer camp for teens with visual impairments, and by visiting residents at retirement homes in Manhattan through DG’s Golden Anchor program. On campus, sisters also volunteer on their own time, whether it’s dancing for 18 hours in the CU Dance Marathon or teaching conflict resolution to elementary school students through Peace by PEACE.
As a chapter, we make an effort to engage other Greek organizations on campus in our philanthropy events. During the Spring of 2010, Zeta Theta invited Greek chapters to participate in our Hope for Haiti Challenge to donate goods to MADRE, an organization that focuses on aiding women and children. The winners, Delta Sigma Phi, received a home-cooked dinner prepared by our sisters! We also partnered with the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon in a cleanup of Morningside Park.
Zeta Theta also supports the philanthropic efforts of other Greek organizations on campus. Last year, DGs participated in Alpha Chi Omega’s Lip Sync, the Delta Sigma Phi Annual Date Auction, Sigma Delta Tau wing-eating contest and were in the audience at Kappa Alpha Theta’s Mr. Fraternity.
Delta Gamma’s motto, “Do Good,” captures each sister’s commitment to bettering her community and is reflected in each sister’s continued service even after graduation. The New York Alumnae chapter is one of the nation’s top ten alumnae fundraising groups for DG’s philanthropy!
