Welcome to the Columbia Students of Color Alliance website!

If you are a new student, welcome to Columbia! And, if you’re a returning student, welcome back!  The GSAS Students of Color Alliance at Columbia University fosters community-building for graduate students of color through sponsored professional, civic, and social activities.

Connect with Us!

If you would like to be put on our mailing list (typically 1 email/week of upcoming events and updates), please sign-up here. You can browse the archive of the SoCA Newsletters to get a sense of what we send out . The weekly email will include other, non-official SoCA events on campus that you can add to your calendar if you find them interesting. We would love to have you join us!

We also have a Google Calendar, which will be populated with both official SoCA events and unofficial gatherings. And, if you’d like to connect informally with your community of color, consider joining our WhatsApp group. Here, any member of our community can unofficially organize events like movie nights, political protests, picnics, etc.

You can also follow us on Twitter or Facebook to learn more about everything from upcoming events and informal social gatherings to current events affecting students of color.

What We Do

SoCA is in the process of revamping itself, but we already have some fun, regular events. Keep an eye out for emails about:

  • End of Summer Picnic, Holiday Party, & End of Year Celebration
  • Happy Hours (~ 6/year)
  • SoCA Graduation Celebration
  • Professional Development Brown-bag Lunches
  • open Executive Board Meetings

Each year, we also host a few unique events, which have included a private tour at the Museum of the City of New York, the Barnard Bike-a-thon, and the NYC AIDS Walk. We’re always looking for more ways to serve both our members and the broader community, so please don’t hesitate to reach out with any suggestions! Here is a link you can use to send us feedback on events, general comments, or questions.

Topical Note – GSAS Dean for Diversity

After the departure of Assistant Dean Isabel Geathers in spring 2017, there has not been a dean in the office of Academic Affairs and Diversity. SoCA has been heavily involved in the screening and interview process for the new hire in this position. A job offer has been extended and we anticipate that the position will be filled beginning summer 2018. A special thank you to our fearless co-chairs, Francisco (Paco) & Viviana who dedicated countless hours to all stages of this search.

Following the hire of a new dean, the SoCa Executive Board will be working closely with GSAS to improve the sustainability this position, as well as guarantee its future.

We’re so excited to welcome you to the students of color community at Columbia!
