First Generation and Low Income Issues Representative

Name: Carolina Garcia

ESC

Bio: My name is Carolina Garcia. I am a second year studying Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction Management in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. I am interning for the Executive Director of Safety Compliance at Facilities and Operations at Columbia University. I am also co-lead engineer of an independent research team improving upon a sustainable and progressive bamboo house model implemented as emergency shelter in Ecuador in wake of the earthquake that devastated the coast in April of 2016.

Platform: First generation and low income students have the right to feel like they belong to a community that not only welcomes them with open arms, but is also willing to offer resources to guide them through the obstacles they will encounter. As representative of these groups I would like to implement initiatives that will facilitate a smooth transition to life on campus that will keep students engaged academically, socially, culturally, and teach them to navigate the challenging and unavoidable factors that they will face during their undergraduate career.
