Party: #Rally

Bios: I’m John (AKA: super extra kid who always posts in the 2018 Facebook group) – I’m from Jersey. I’m pre-med, on the fencing team, and in Global Brigades, Mental Health Taskforce, COÖP, and the KDR fraternity. Favorite TV show is Arrested Development, and you can catch me in Ferris on Thursdays downing buffalo chicken wraps. I’ve served on CCSC for 2 years – first appointed, and this year as the 2018 VP. With other CCSC members, I’ve tried to make positive policy changes here, and hope to continue doing so next year. Hyped to hopefully make our Senior year lit.
Hi my name is Emily Lavine and I’m a junior in CC from Lexington, Massachusetts. I have had an awesome three (almost!) years at Columbia, and I really want to make Senior Year the best one yet. On campus, I’m currently a Representative for 2018 and I am also involved in Jewish Life programs at Hillel, alumni relations initiatives through Columbia College Student Ambassadors, and volunteering in local Elementary schools with Peace by Peace. In my free time you can find me at Zumba classes, waiting in the John Jay Omelet line, or obsessing over my dog (and her insta!).

Platform: Hey y’all!

Are you ready to #Rally? We are John, Emily, Matt, Nicki, and Lord, and we are so excited to be running for CCSC 2018!

We have lots of ideas for next year (many of which are outlined below) but what’s most important to us is that we try to make next year as fun and stress-free as possible. Let any of us know if you have any questions about our platform.  We are excited to hear your ideas!

Much love,

John, Emily, Matt, Nicki, Lord

Senior Spirit

1)    Senior swag –that’s actually cool! Apparel giveaways so you’ll have enough Columbia gear to wear the next 10 years after college.

2)    Financially accessible senior events – as a class council, we’d want to make our events as accessible as possible to the majority of our class, and work with the financial aid office and (maybe senior fund)? to get subsidized prices for people when necessary!

3)    #TBT – photo recreation contests with prizes, NSOP: revisited (forever young), “The Senior Last Supper”—seniors take over John Jay with Columbia faculty, The Senior Voice–senior karaoke / bar night in Lerner, perhaps in conjunction with Lerner pubs!

4)    Night on the lawns–first week of classes, senior pillow fight out on the lawns in front of Butler! Afterwards, sleep out on the lawns in a sleeping bag—for COÖP kids, relive that magical first night out on the lawns!

Collaboration with campus offices

1)    Collaboration with the Mental Health Task Force / stressbusters to hold plenty of study breaks / free food

2)    Open forums for discussion to discuss mental health and destigmatizing it on campus—work with Awakening Democracy to have lunchtime conversations that YOU are interested in!

3)    Expanded partnerships with CCE – the art of the interview, “what comes next?,” more alumni meet and greets, bridging the gap—joining our large, expansive alumni network

4)    Working with CPS to create support groups for common illnesses (anxiety and depression, bipolar, familial loss, stomach issues, relationship trouble, graduation and moving on, etc.)

Community Building

1)    Work with the Campus Life committee to plan Senior specific events— senior tailgate, senior assassins… more collaboration with ESC 2018, GSSC 2018, and SGA 2018

2)    “Where to?” – large, interactive map where seniors note what they’re doing after graduation so you can meet up with people near you!

3)    Continuation of… campus wide staff appreciation day! Write reasons you’re grateful for our faculty, pins people can give staff workers, pins people can wear around campus…

4)    Opt in text system for CCSC 2018 –give us your number, and you can opt in to getting texts from us, just for convenience’s sake!

Party: TwentyEightTeam

Bio: Stephan Montes, a New York-born Miami native, is running for the Class of 2018 President as a member of TwentyEightTeam. He currently serves as a Columbia College Class of 2018 Class Representatives. Having been on student council for the past two years, Stephan has gained valuable experience in the operations of student council. Formerly a Resident Adviser in Carman Hall, Stephan is currently a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and a member of Columbia Against Cancer. He is a John Jay Dining Hall loyal and in his spare time, he enjoys playing basketball and watching romantic comedies.

Alex Swanson is a Classics major from London, England, and is running to be Class of 2018 Vice President as a member of TwentyEightTeam. His biggest goal for next year is to work with Student Life to improve the quality and the frequency of campus entertainment. As well as this, he aims to get the senior class involved with Columbia’s alumni network as early as possible. Alex has had extensive experience in event-planning and alumni networking to realize these goals. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of The Blue and White and is President Emeritus of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity (FIJI).

Platform:TwentyEightTeam is focused on improving the senior class experience. Firstly, we want to expand CPS programming and intertwine Columbia mental health services with our events. As we have seen in our past three years at Columbia, mental health has been area of campus life that lacks acknowledgement. We will prioritize it for the general well-being of our peers and the greater student body. Secondly, we want the more marginalized groups on campus to have a larger voice. Our class is made strong through diversity, and so we will work tirelessly to ensure all groups have equal platform. Thirdly, we understand that finding employment after graduation is a concern to every senior. We will work with Columbia’s Center for Career Education to widen the range of internship programs offered beyond just marketing, consulting, and finance. Along with this, for those who pursue other avenues after graduation (graduate school, fellowships, etc.), we will be working with Columbia College’s Center for Student Advising to make this transition as smooth as possible. Additionally, we want seniors to be prepared for graduate life as comprehensively as possible, and so we will get the class involved in young alumni, alumni programming, and the wider Columbia College Alumni Association through a series of meet-and-greets, information sessions, and other events. Our last objective is to improve the life of the senior. It is our last year at Columbia; by partnering with University Student Life and Campus Life, we want to ensure that it is one filled with fun, memorable events, and will be a solid reminder of why we all chose to become Lions in the first place.
