Social Processes in Juvenile Probation

Social Processes in Juvenile Probation

Description

While important to juvenile justice outcomes, relationship processes between court-involved youths and probation officers have not been studied to date. This study will illuminate qualities of the probation relationship and establish their relevance to three youth outcomes: risk and need reduction, violation of probation, and recidivism. The study employs a mixed methods design including a longitudinal study to examine predictors and outcomes of the probation relationship (N=300) and an observational study with youth-probation officer dyads to examine micro-level probation processes (N=40). Findings of this study will inform the development of evidence-based policies and practices to strengthen probation relationships.
